Tea

My tea bag is bigger than my tea cup.

Oh. Also, I tried cutting my own bangs. That is why they are crooked.

Firewire

Okay. So I couldn't find info on USB being comparable to firewire. Instead I found this article on why they should have put firewire in the new MBPs. Sigh.

IT Pros Find Lack of FireWire on MacBooks Disturbing
By Brian X. Chen EmailOctober 22, 2008 | 5:27:58 PMCategories: Apple, Notebooks

Sleek, sexy and silver, Apple's new MacBook may be a consumer's dream machine. But to some information-technology professionals, its lack of FireWire makes it look like a nightmare.

"I've been fixing Macs for 15 years, and this to me is just a big middle finger in the face for us Mac guys," said Tom Koch, the owner of Omnitech, a Mac repair service.

Despite the slew of positive reviews for the aluminum MacBook, many potential users are complaining about Apple's peculiar omission of FireWire connectivity from the device. (The higher-end MacBook Pro has a FireWire 800 port, but the cheaper MacBook does not.) The removed feature is an annoyance to consumers who have FireWire devices — like external hard drives or camcorders — that they'd like to connect to their MacBooks. But the port's absence is a grave concern to some IT professionals who say corrupt MacBooks will be difficult to troubleshoot without it.

Specifically, the problem is that the new MacBooks are unable to start up in FireWire Target Disk Mode, which enables users to connect to the computer from another Mac, turning the target computer into an external drive. That's especially useful for diagnosing problems when the targeted computer won't even run. Without Target Disk Mode, the only alternative for troubleshooting a corrupt MacBook is to physically remove the drive, which increases the risk of losing information, said Koch. It's also more time and trouble.

"I work in a large school district that doesn't like Macs," wrote Russ Tolman, an IT professional, in Apple's support forum. "One thing that has allowed us to keep them has been the ability to image them with FireWire Ports. Also, the ability to diagnose and fix problems using Target Disk Mode. Would love to hear how I am going to do that now.... Schools without much money will be moving to cheap PCs."

Concerns over the death of FireWire on the new MacBooks surfaced before Apple even announced them. Early, leaked spy photos of the notebook's case gave away that the port was gone — a surprising move, because Apple created the FireWire interface in 1995. By 2003, the FireWire interface was on almost every computer machine. Consumers generally use FireWire to connect devices requiring high-speed data transfers, such as camcorders and hard drives — another area of concern in regard to the new MacBook.

The lack of FireWire may trouble MacBook owners in other ways, too. If, for example, you backed up your data on an external hard drive and your MacBook crashed, you'd no longer have FireWire to easily restore that information using Apple's Time Machine recovery service. Instead, you'll have to transfer the information by USB — which is not friendly with Time Machine, Koch notes: Sometimes the backup application doesn't recognize USB drives, among other issues.

Also, customers looking to upgrade from their old Mac to the new MacBook won't have FireWire to seamlessly copy over their data from one machine to the other. Instead, they'll have to perform this migration over an ethernet cable, which is "a drag" as some files often get lost, said James Galbraith, Macworld's Lab Director.

It remains unclear why Apple removed FireWire from the popular MacBook. One sliver of potential insight into the removal comes from a screen capture of a purported e-mail exchange between Steve Jobs and a customer. In the message, the customer complains he can no longer recommend MacBooks to his friends, because the notebook's lack of FireWire breaks compatibility with camcorders. In response, Jobs points out that most new camcorders are compatible with USB.

But it's not that simple: Most new camcorders are tapeless, hard-drive or flash-based devices, which are highly problematic with Apple's editing software.

Apple representatives contacted by Wired.com had no comment on the new computers' lack of FireWire ports.

Welcome back!

Hi Em,

Thanksgiving was nice. Mommy made chicken which I kept thinking was turkey for some reason. We had yams, cheese & toast, stuffing, salad, etc. Mommy made a mango sponge cake which we ate the next morning. (too full to eat after dinner)

My birthday was nice. It was nice being at home even though Viv tried to squish me to death and Owen preferred tv and falling asleep on the couch. :P

Can't wait to see pics!

Recipe: Broccoli & Cheetos

Craig Koketsu’s Broccoli & Cheetos

Provided by: Chef Craig Koketsu
Served at: Park Avenue Autumn

* Type of Dish: Appetizers, Salads, Sides
* Servings: 6-8
* Cuisine: American
* Special Requests: Budget-Friendly, Kid-Friendly, Quick and Easy, Vegetarian/Vegan

Reader Rating:Write a Review

Despite its Superfood status, broccoli—at your local Greenmarket now— is not an easy sell. Craig Koketsu of the hyperseasonal Park Avenue Autumn has a solution: crushing and then sprinkling Cheetos over the healthful veggie. Now, as far as we know, Cheetos—whether they be of the crunchy or puffy variety—are not a seasonal food, if food is the right word to describe them. But let’s not quibble. “It’s our most popular side dish,” says Koketsu. “It outsells French fries.”
Ingredients

FOR THE BROCCOLI
3 large heads of broccoli, stems peeled and cut into 1/4-inch discs; florets cut into small pieces
3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 teaspoon red chile flakes
3 tablespoons butter
Salt to taste

FOR THE CHEESE SAUCE
1 quart heavy cream
2 tablespoons chopped shallots
2 tablespoons garlic, chopped
10 black peppercorns
1 bay leaf
2 cups aged Gouda, grated
1 cup Parmesan, grated
Salt to taste
1/2 9-ounce bag of Crunchy Cheetos
Instructions
FOR THE BROCCOLI: Blanch florets and stems in boiling salted water for 3 minutes. Remove and shock in ice water. Cool and drain. Place large sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add olive oil, garlic, and chile flakes and sweat, being careful not to brown garlic. Add butter and melt fully into oil. (1) When the butter and oil begin to bubble, add broccoli and sauté until heated through. Adjust seasoning with salt and reserve broccoli on a paper-towel-lined plate. FOR THE CHEESE SAUCE: In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, reduce cream with shallots, garlic, peppercorns, and bay leaf until it thickly coats the back of a spoon. Remove from heat and whisk in cheeses until fully melted. Adjust seasoning with salt. (2) Strain sauce through fine-mesh strainer and keep warm in a bain-marie. Crush the Cheetos in the bag into pebble-size bits with a rolling pin. to serve: Pour warm sauce into a large serving dish. Arrange broccoli on top of sauce. (3) Top with crushed Cheetos. Potato, Ham and Piquillo Pepper Croquetas

November 19, 2008
Recipe from the NY Times
Potato, Ham and Piquillo Pepper Croquetas

Time: 1 hour plus at least 30 minutes’ chilling

3 cups mashed potatoes, chilled

2 1/4 cups plain bread crumbs

2 ounces serrano ham (about a half-cup), diced small

1/2 cup piquillo or roasted red pepper, diced small

5 large eggs

1 egg yolk

1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, more to taste

1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika, optional

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, more to taste

1 cup all-purpose flour

Olive oil or vegetable oil, for frying.

1. In a large bowl, combine potatoes, 3/4 cup bread crumbs, ham, pepper, 1 egg, the yolk, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, paprika (if using) and salt. Mix well.

2. Place remaining 4 eggs in a wide, shallow bowl and beat lightly. Place remaining 1 1/2 cups bread crumbs in a second bowl and flour in a third. Season bread crumbs with 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper.

3. Taking about 2 tablespoons of croquetas mixture at a time, form into 3-inch fingers. Dip each finger first in flour, tapping off excess. Dip in egg mixture, letting excess drip off, then bread crumbs. Transfer each finger to a large baking sheet. When you have finished forming all croquetas, cover tray with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes and up to 12 hours.

4. When ready to fry, heat 1/4-inch oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry croquetas in batches, turning once, until dark golden all over, 2 to 3 minutes a side. Transfer to paper towel-lined plates and sprinkle with additional salt, if desired. Serve hot.

Yield: About 3 dozen croquetas.

Mustard Lime Beef Steaks Recipe

This sounds delish! For Deb and James mostly since they enjoy the steak-fest on occasion.

Ingredients

4 sirloin beef steaks (roughly 1" thick)
1/4 cup of dry mustard (Colman's works well)
1/4 cup Worcestershire Sauce (Lea and Perrins works well)
Lime Juice or 1 large lime
Coarse salt (sea salt is what I use)
Freshly ground white pepper
Preparation

Cover the steaks on one side with 2 tablespoons of dry mustard. Pat it down and spread evenly with the back side of a fork. Sprinkle two tablespoons of worcestershire sauce over the steaks, allowing it to soak into the mustard--patting the steaks with the fork if necessary. Dribble a bit of lime juice over the steaks.

Season the steaks with a good amount of salt and pepper. Then flip the steaks and repeat on the other side. Let them marinate for 20-30 minutes while pre-heating the grill.
Cooking

Clean and oil the grill. Cook the steaks on high heat for roughly 4 to 6 minutes per side, aiming to keep them pink on the inside. Do not rotate the steaks to make those nice cross-hatched grill marks. Doing so may knock off some of the mustard and seasonings.

Let the steaks sit for a few minutes. Slice and enjoy. :-)

Presents

Hey. Maybe I'll go. I have to think about it. It sounds cool though. Lemme know when you figure out where you're going in Mexico City.

I'm getting Owen a bike bell. I remembered him telling me he wanted one. and maybe a bike light and cool biking gloves (or a cushiony seat, or maybe a bike book so he can learn how to fix bikes)

Dooders

What are you guys getting Owen for his birthday?

Whoa tiger.

I bought my ticket on Travelocity and that's about as far as I've gotten. I'm flying there on Wednesday and leaving on Sunday (or Monday, I think). I still need to book a hotel and figure out what areas I'm going to. Of course you are welcome to come. It will be me and my friend from Berkeley, Minh-Huyen. Have to start planning it now.

Hello cats,

I just bought my ticket for Thanksgiving this year...to Mexico City. I have wanted to go for so long and when my friend told me tickets were on sale, I jumped and bought them. I am really sad that I won't be home for Thanksgiving because I want to see everyone and I miss you guys a lot. You'll just have to contain all your love and excitement for Christmas. I know, I know. It will be hard. But you can channel all of that love and missing me in wonder-fill and lover-ly presents.

Skin Patch Test

Hi there,

I took a skin patch earlier this week and wanted to share with you the results. It may be that you're allergic to them too. I took the T.R.U.E. Test that tests for 29 allergens. I tested positive for the following:

1. Ethylenediamine Dihydrochloride
2. Formaldehyde
3. Thimerosal

They also have other names. You can check by clicking on the links. The above can be found in certain skin care products, make up, cleaning agents, clothing, eye drops, etc.

My dermatologist did it for me. It takes a week. Hope it helps!

Cool Article on how HP started

Birth of the Cool (Company, That Is).

With a nut of $500 in cash, borrowed from Terman, plus a used Sears, Roebuck drill press, Hewlett-Packard swung into action in the small shed behind Packard's modest house at 367 Addison Ave. The company's first product, released in 1938, was an audio oscillator used for testing sound equipment. When the Walt Disney Company bought eight of them to develop the technically advanced movie Fantasia, HP was off-and-running.

So I bought my ticket to SFO and I will be home from August 27 through September 1st.

I have to check out Tira's spa but other than that, no plans. I was thinking a road trip to Yosemite... any takers? It's almost my birthday around that time, we can re-live my 21st. Except for the Serina-fainting episode.

Hi

So now I've uploaded pictures of our new comfy couches. So comfy I think I've gain a lot of weight! Don't you also like how Owen is my model? Also Gong Gong bought us a new glass Tv stand and fixed his Sony flat screened TV for us. Our living room looks pretty different and will be even more different once we paint it. Metal Arts

Hey guys,

So picasa finally helped me upload my photos. These are some of things I made in class. The two earrings I made on my own with wire @ home. I plan to start selling I hope. My elephant melted, but I plan on taking another metal class in the future so hopefully I can repair him. The square ring is yours em (I know you don't like gold, but its brass actually and sterling is super expensive). I'm also working on a handbag but once I get used to all the sewing and patterning, you get a bag Serins. I'm working on a red one now and hopefully a black one when I get back from Brazil (your choice). I'm leaving on Monday! Sorry for missing your call serina, been busy!

Hi there

Hi everyone,

How's it going? I'm doing okay. I think I realize I have mild lactose intolerance. I suffered a week of painful gas not realizing it was the cheese intake and when I did realize it, it was hard to give it up. :P Anyway, Comicon is this week and I'll be heading over there. Hope all is well. Viv, are you all ready for your trip?

Hi

Hi There,

Em, you can visit SD if you'd like. I've become a better tour guide with practice. :)

I know I can change it. I guess I just make it more confusing and complicated when I start trying to weigh all the factors. It pretty much comes down to me deciding I don't like it. I've spoken to management and now we're at the point of change. All that bent up frustration is leaking out and I can't seem to hang on some patience while things change for the better here. Being a bum doesn't seem smart or realistic. I guess I'm wanting to be safe. Anyway, blah blah blah complaining. I'm done. :)

Green is the new black

Everything is going green. There's even a green network. We are in line with today's world.

I think it will be great once we decorate it a little and get some complementary colors and some neutral pillows and some artwork in there. Mommy will get used to it. She was resistant to your yellow room at first and look how nicely that turned out.

Well, my days off are August 28 through the 1st. I think I might use those days for a vacation. Location tbd.

Sorry about work Serins. You don't have to stay there. You have the power to change it. There's more options in life than "work" or "bum". Though either are perfectly acceptable if it makes you happy.

BRAZIL and the explanation of GREEN

Hey guys,

About Brazil. I am buying tickets for my flights through the school so I probably won't be able to go with you Em or Serina, because the teachers already set it all up, including the return ticket. Although I really want to go to Brazil I don't want to risk getting lost on my way to the hostel. It would probably be best to follow the group. I really want to go to Peru though, so how about we plan a trip next summer to go to Peru, plus it will be cheaper because we'll buy the tickets earlier.
Here's my itinerary:
1 United 886 04AUG San Francisco - Los Angeles 1:00pm - 2:19pm
2 Lanchile 603 04AUG Los Angeles - Santiago 3:55pm - 600am +1 *
3 Lanchile 750 05AUG Santiago - Sao Paulo 710am -1:45pm

4 Lanperu 764 26AUG Sao Paulo - Lima 8:05pm- 11:25pm
5 Lanperu 604 27AUG Lima - Los Angeles 1:40am - 7:15am
6 United 157 27AUG Los Angeles - San Francisco 10:00am-11:25am
and school then starts on Sept. 1

So serina,
You really don't like the green. Its actually not glossy. It was still wet when I took the photos. It actually not too bad. It a duller darker green than the pictures. I don't know it kinda grew on me, but I guess its because i looked at it so much (but you're gonna have to change the curtains, Em because right now its red flowers, making the room look a little Christmassy). I think Mommy hates it, but I suggested the Amelie color you wanted, Em and she said " Why so dark". So I think we're just gonna have to agree to disagree. I don't mind repainting it if you guys really want to change the color, but you're gonna have to deal with Mommy first, because I have no idea what color she wants anymore.

Sorry about work Serins.

Oh dear..

Oh my gosh! Stop! What's with the gloss? No gloss! Wow. Wait, is that just the flash? Wow. One wall of that color is plenty. Cover it with a lot of posters. I think you should stop? (Speechless on this.)

I'm having a work crisis...again. This time it's pretty bad but the good news is that things are changing and change is good. I have to make a lot of decisions in the present future. A slightly appealing option is to be a bum, which I am considering.

Ooh, maybe I can go to Brazil if Em goes. Viv, you're going with your school, right?

Hope all is well with all. Take care and talk to you soon.

Saturday, June 7, 2008

The Bean

I'm calling my room "The Bean." How long are you in Brazil again, Viv? I might come out and visit. I have a few days off at the end of August and I want to travel.

I'm taking a woodshop class tomorrow. I'm going to build furniture! (I hope!)

Thursday, June 5, 2008

The Hulk

I'm calling your room the hulk. Actually I saw it as a really dark green too. But if it make you feel any better its a little darker than the pictures because I took the pictures when it was wet. It actually not that bad... although I have to agree it is a little on the 70's side. We can always paint it again in a few years.

And

I didn't mean to sound ungrateful, Viv. Thank you very much for painting my room.

Holy Crap

That is hella green. It looks very....70s. Sigh. I guess it's my own fault. I wanted to go dark and I should have just stuck to my guns instead of sort of compromising with Mommy.

Lesson learned, if you do something, do it all the way. If you go dark green, go dark. Sigh.

I was trying to go for Amelie green or the green that Claire Danes has in her room in Shopgirl.

Wednesday, June 4, 2008

GREEN

Hey guys,
So I might have told you guys I'm painting em's room green. I started today and finished one wall so far. Em picked the color. It's quite green. I want to say a dark mint. I'm not so sure Mommy likes it because when she opened the door she grunted. It's a little intense because after awhile of painting everything else was PINK.

Burrito Breaker

They have "burritos" out here. But they're no good. No good at all.

Yes! Let's go to Bay to Breakers. You guys can register - I'll walk/jog for as long as I can breathe.

I laughed

Just kidding. I think I was a bit shocked. Those eagles are sharp and a lot bigger than I thought. They could probably take down a human if you irritated it enough.

Viv, I liked the artwork on your site. I'm in agreement with Em. What is it? I think you should also add an header at least with a site name. Alright, ttyl!

I'm really surprised they don't have burritos there Em. You can make your own or wait a week and grab one in CA. :)

As for as Bay to Breakers were you guys interested in going? It's on Sunday, May 18 It's 12k, about 7.5 miles. Viv and Owen expressed interest. It is $45 for registration. You could totally run without being registered but your time won't get recorded unless you do it on your own. I'm going to be running at a pretty slow pace. I think it might be cool just to get out there. There will be a lot of people walking (partiers). :) ttyl.

By the way, I got my haircut yesterday, and I got this weird bob. It looks like my hair did when I was in 5th grade. rice bowl cut. :P

Well

I didn't laugh at the poor little goats but neither did I set up a little prayer alter for their poor departed souls. Life and death, it's a vicious cycle.

Viv, you site looks great but...well, what is it for? There's no description anywhere about what the project is.

Can't wait to go home. My head hurts and I miss burritos.

I had something to post. Something of importance. But I've forgotten what it was and now I have to go to the bathroom.

Pretty interesting article on the market

Interview with a hedge fund broker.

Okay people

I think it's time we learned how to link.

That dinner in the sky experience looks horrifying. Besides being afraid of heights, I can just see myself dropping a piece of food, a chip or something, and falling to my death trying to go after it.

April Fool's Day

Did you get any good jokes in for April fool's this year? Or did anyone play a prank on you?

The best I did was tell Brian his fly was down. Hehe, hope all is well.

SF's new Transbay Terminal

Hey take a look at the new transbay terminal coming up. They plan to change SF's whole skyline in the coming years and there is talk of Renzo Piano creating the tallest towers in the US to be housed in SF.

Hi There

Hey guys,

Well, Yiyi got the basket and asked me to forward the thank you note to you guys. Did you guys receive it earlier this week? Please let me know so I can resend or delete it from my inbox. Thanks for ordering it Em. Let me know how much I owe.

I just came back from VA with a nasty cough and cold. It's freezing over there. I narrowly missed the storm. Are you doing okay Em? It's affected the midwest to the east coast. When I was there I saw George Washington's house, Mount Vernon. Viv, did you know he was a self educated architect? He did several expansions to his home. It's kind of neat.

Alright, talk to you soon.

Welp

I got a mixed fruit basket for Gonggong with oranges and cashews and stuff. Sort of worried about getting him crunchy objects - don't know how his dentures are doing but maybe Yiyi will enjoy them.

Work, work, work. I am so freaking glad this weekend is a 3 day weekend. I just want to stay in and veg out. I'm dogsitting for Jill and I'm just going to take long bubble baths and read trashy summer novels.

I wish it were summer. :(

I'm looking for a new roommate and can't wait to start that process. I just hope that my tastes have improved and I won't get another maggot boy or grumpy girl.

Sigh. One grump is enough.

Hi There

Hi, how is everyone? I'm doing okay. Em, I plan to be in town during the next 3 day weekend. I believe that's in May during Memorial day. Thanks for the scarf. As far as the baskets, I think the Royal Fruit Basket looks good. Let me know what you decide.

I went to the aquarium today. It was pretty fun. I saw all kinds of jelly fish and those leafy sea horses that always fascinate me. How was everyone else's weekend? Ttys.

Okay

I know I dropped the ball for Christmas but let's get Gong Gong and YiYi a fruit basket for Chinese New Year's. Do you like any of these?

Hey guys

Viv, your website is cool. It seems like such a great thing to learn.

Serins, how are you? I found a scarf that I think you'd like. I'm sending it in a package with some other stuff for Viv and Owen to South City. When are you going to be there next?

Any plans for President's day?

WEBSITES!!

Hi guys,

So check out my website! It's for school so it's a little plain right now and it's only projects in process, but hopefully it gets cooler once I get the hang of the software. If there are no changes then it's taking me a long time to figure out the software. This is the first one. It's a series of clips I extracted from a movie clip and basically its a mapping of movement and drawings of them in plan elevation and a tracing of the perspective. It might get changed, but we'll see. I'm not so sure I like this version. Enjoy, no laughing. I'll talk to you later

Yo

Hey guys.

How's everyone? I just got back from Sundance today. It was awesome! I only spent a couple of days there but it was so nice. All I did was hang out with friends and watch movies. It's back to work tomorrow and no more vacations for a while.

Family Trip

Mommy pointed out that the Olympics will be held in China this year. Do you think that may pose a problem for us to go? It also seems the best time to go is later in the year. Any thoughts?

Hi!

Thanks for the info, Viv. I just saw your message. Too bad cuz I did want to see "Persuasion". I ended up watching quite a few episodes of the Monk Marathon last night. :P

Em, I'm not sure where you buy the stuff either. I figure NY would be the closest you could get it in the U.S.

I saw "Juno" and "Enchanted" this weekend (Yeah I know, a lot of TV, bleh!). I really liked both of them. That's all. :P

Talk to you guys soon.

Sup guys. Serins, I love the Japanese magazine. It's good stuff. I wish I could read Japanese so I know where to buy all that stuff.

Viv arrived yesterday and she is getting ready now. I'm going to set her loose to wander the streets of the city while I work today.

How are you guys?

Happy New Year

Hi Everyone!

How's it going? I had a great new year. Mommy hosted a New Year's Eve party at our place. Gong Gong, Aunt Nora, Viv, Owen, his friends, my friend, and I were there. There was a lot of food and I thought it was fun. Then I went to Brian's place and played a Murder Mystery Game. That game seems like a fun one to host.

I saw Darjeeling Limited. It's not really my kind of movie but I thought it was a bit entertaining and interesting. I think you'd like it.

I'm really glad you like the socks. I figured it's freezing cold over there, and they'd come in handy. :) I do try to get people gifts I think they'd like. Not sure if you got to go through the Japanese magazine. I guess the idea was kind of out there. I figured you're kind of into fashion and there are a lot of cute clothes & styles in it. That edition features winter wear. If you plan to design or make your own clothing, that mag. may be a great reference for ideas. Well, maybe, maybe not, no biggie. :)

I think going to Hong Kong first is fine with me. If everyone is okay with that too then we'll plan for that. I would love to meet more relatives. Actually, I'm pretty sure Yeye has met me before. I think it was when I was really young, possibly a toddler.

Talk to you soon!

Yo Yo Yo

Ho Ho Ho. How was everyone's New Year?

I went to a party in Queens with my friends Cecilia and her cousin Tammy . It was very small and relaxed; at a friend of a friend's house. It was okay. Truthfully, I really wanted to stay at home and watch DVDs. I watched the Royal Tennenbaums again and I appreciated it more this time around. I still want to see Darjeeling Limited.

Serina, I hope you made it back safely. I called to tell you that the socks you got me are GREAT. They are really warm and fit perfectly.

Viv, let's go ice-skating when you get here! It should be sunny and cold so bring warm clothes.

I think instead of going to Japan for our first family trip, we should go to Hong Kong. Mommy really wants to go back and it'd be fun to see it all together. Yeye has never met Owen, Viv or Serina; I'd like to see Uncle Cesar and Auntie Ella again, they're really fun. We can EAT. It'll be great. What do you guys think?
